Guidance on exam accommodation for pupils with autism

We have been tasked with developing guidance for education providers, teachers, exams officers and examination bodies on how pupils with autism should be accommodated during exams. We will work with an appointed consultant to develop specific guidance that might include the use of an enhanced pupil profile that details the exam accommodations the pupil needs.

One particular strand of it is looking at the way exam questions are structured and worded and other ways of testing knowledge and how these can create barriers for pupils with autism. We want to identify ways of removing these barriers without reducing the subject challenge involved.

We aim to produce guidance on good practice in accessible question setting, looking at English and Maths papers, and will test these via workshops with pupils.
