Many people are scared of needles but sometimes it is necessary for your doctor to give you an injection or take blood from you for a blood test.
- Make sure the doctor or nurse knows about your anxiety and allows extra time to carry out the procedure.
- Ask the doctor whether there are any needle-free alternatives.
- An anaesthetic spray or gel on the area of skin to be injected might help as this will alleviate any pain you might experience.
- Find out about relaxation techniques that might help your anxiety or ways you can distract yourself from the needle.
REMEMBER… as with many things that we feel anxious about, the anticipation is often worse than the reality – try to focus on the time after the injection.
