Who is this module for?
This module is aimed at all education professionals working in the Early Years, which includes childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.
Description
This module focuses on the importance of getting to know a child and how their autism affects them.
We look at examples of distressed behaviours and how these can be supported through a range of strategies, approaches, and reasonable adjustments. The module also guides you through how to gather information about an autistic child’s interests, aspirations, strengths and differences and how this information can be used when developing a Child-Centred Education Plan (CCEP).
The module introduces the AET Early Years Competency Framework so that you can develop and evaluate their good autism practice following completion of the module.
The aims
Good autism practice in the Early Years with support you:
- To develop knowledge and understanding of good autism practice.
- To increase expertise in using practical strategies and approaches that support autistic children.
- To develop knowledge about autism and the individual to inform child-centred planning.
- To help you to reflect on and improve their practice in working with autistic children.
Learning objectives
After completing ‘Good autism practice in the Early Years’, you will be able to:
- Understand that autism is a difference rather than a deficit or disorder.
- Recognise the Three Areas of Difference in autism and how these can affect autistic children.
- Be confident in using the Autism Competency Framework.
- Involve the autistic child and their family in decisions.
- Use a range of approaches, strategies, and adaptations to remove barriers to learning and play.

AET Early Years Good Autism Practice (tier 2)
Session 1 – Wednesday 8th March 2023
Session 2 – Wednesday 15th March 2023
Session 3 – Wednesday 22nd March 2023
9.30am-11.30am
This will be a virtual session held via Zoom.
This is a three-part training designed for practitioners working directly with young children with autism in all types of early years settings; this includes: childminders, nursery nurses/assistants, teachers, SENCos.
It links approaches and strategies to the AET EY Competency Framework.
What will you learn?
- To develop your knowledge and understanding of good autism practice.
- To understand the guidelines and activities to improve your practice when caring for or working with a child on the autism spectrum.
- How to use the early years autism competency framework to evaluate and develop how you work.
