Webcast number three in our Autism Insights series delves into the importance of language when engaging with autistic people and discussing autism.

In this webcast Teacher, Mentor and Consultant, Ashleigh Coles Walker, who herself is autistic examines the powerful connection between language and thought—how the words we choose reflect our perceptions of autism and autistic individuals. It highlights how language can either promote understanding and acceptance or cause significant harm, shaping how others view autism.

What you will learn:

  • An understanding of how language influences perceptions of autism, fostering greater acceptance and appreciation.

  • An invitation to critically examine and challenge your own language choices regarding autism.

  • Insight into the harmful effects of ableist language on autistic people, their families, and the broader community.

Aligned with the new Autism Education Trust Terminology Guide—created in collaboration with the Young Autistic Experts Panel—this webcast encourages us to reflect on the way we speak and think about autism and emphasises the importance of using language preferred by autistic individuals.
